Ears, eyes & HIV

At Thursday's cafe Dr Erik Schaftenaar will explore the links between eye disease and HIV; sharing his experience working as an ophthalmologist on a Limpopo-based project that is taking action against eye disease in the context of HIV.

Cherae Halley and John Meletse from GALA’s Deaf HIV/AIDS Awareness Project, will explore the status quo in deaf HIV education, its implications for HIV awareness and highlight alternative approaches to communicating HIV information to the Deaf community. The presentation will also focus on John Meletse's personal journey, taking on the lens of a black, Deaf, gay man living openly with HIV. Through John's narrative, the presentation will advocate for participatory and community-focused methods of intervention.

The café features two 20-minute talks by a specialists in the fields of eye disease and HIV and deafness and HIV, followed by a casual roundtable chat. Designed with your busy schedule in mind, our cafés offer you the opportunity to connect with an expert and get targeted information—all in the time it takes to grab a quick bite and something to drink (and those are on us).
