TNA talks comprehensive care

The 14th of November marks World Diabetes Day and The New Age (TNA) has produced an article highlighting the “silent pandemic”.

The TNA article is a good example of considered and comprehensive coverage of an important health concern. It combines celebrity, personal experience, statistics and medical advice into a helpful and interesting read that sketches both a global and localised picture of the situation.

Important for the South African context, the article considers the high incidence of HIV infection and points out that as these conditions often co-exist, their management tends to be complicated.

According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) combating and treating diabetes in Africa is further compounded by poor access to treatment and widespread poverty, the same obstacles that make HIV treatment problematic.

This integration of HIV into a health-related story is an encouraging display of mainstreaming the epidemic into broader discussions around health.

Though two very different conditions, diabetes and HIV are also often likened to each other as they were both once fatal and now are managable chronic conditions.
