According to an article printed in the Sowetan, there seems to be no fear of a Multi Drug Resistant (MDR) TB outbreak in the KZN area. Nonetheless local government has set out on a campaign to alert people and gear them towards early treatment and staying on treatment
A report released by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in September this year, states that women in the region are more susceptible to contracting MDR-TB and XDR-TB than men, due to the higher HIV prevlance in the area.
The CDC study parameters span from 2003-2008 and do not take into consideration recent TB infection rates which are the main subject of contention in the Sowetan article. The message from health officials is clear: get tested and stick to your treatment.
