This week the Daily Sun struck a good balance between advocacy and raising important issues in telling HIV-positive Mumsy’s story.
Monday’s edition of the people’s paper featured a small piece on HIV-positive Mumsy who can no longer walk after she defaulted on her antiretroviral treatment (ART).
With the people’s interest being one of the cornerstones of the Daily Sun, Mumsy’s story is an appeal. But the Daily Sun also put an equal amount of emphasis on issues around adherence to antiretroviral treatment (ART).
The Daily Sun makes it very clear that Mumsy’s disability is a direct result of not listening to her doctors and stopping her ARVs.
The paper also acknowledges that Mumsy fell prey to a common misconception that people can discontinue their ARVs once they start feeling stronger.
In making the causes of her ill health abundantly clear, the Daily Sun has integrated the message that adherence to ART is essential into their appeal to help Mumsy.
