Reports in both the Sowetan and The Citizen today cover the ongoing debacle involving the supply of female condoms to South Africa.

According to the papers an R11 million tender was awarded to a chinese manufacturer to supply South Africa with female condoms.

However the condoms are not  WHO approved and their distribution could have resulted in many South Africans unknowingly putting themselves at risk.

The Citizen refers to the female condom as “the only female initiated tool for HIV prevention and unplanned pregnancy.” And yet had the above scenario played out many South Africans could have been at risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV.

The tender was subsequently awarded to a company which will ensure that South Africans are supplied with WHO approved FC2 female condoms.
